Personal branding is a term we hear a lot, especially relative to agents trying to market themselves to prospective clients. But are you missing the branding inspiration right in front of you?

Mark Kentwell, founding director of PRDnationwide Newcastle and Lake Macquarie and REB’s 58th ranked agent in the Top 100 Agents, spoke with REB about his favourite branded company and how he integrates its ethos into his professional brand.

“You think about Apple computers and I think they’re some of the best branding companies in the world ... the box they come in is beautiful, the logo’s beautiful, the store’s beautiful so everything you see about Apple reminds you of Apple and I think you’ve got to think of your own personal brand like that,” Mr Kentwell said at the Secrets of the Top 100 Agents event in Sydney.

Mr Kentwell said it is important to “tune to your market”, but added that there is also value in doing what everyone else is doing.

“... That’s fine if everyone’s doing it, but then just be a little bit cleaner and crisper than the others in how you present yourself, how you wash your car [and] how you turn up to appointments on time,” he said.

Mr Kentwell praised Apple’s branding for its cleanliness and simplicity, especially in its marketing material.

“Have a good think about your branding position and where you stand on certain matters and how you like to come across, what market you’re going after on dollar value, and making sure that everything’s consistent,” he said.
