Ever wondered what gets top agents out of bed every day?

Speaking at AREC 2016, McGrath Edgecliff’s William Manning and William Phillips, from BresicWhitney, shared what pushes them to achieve success.

Both agents cited passion and competitiveness as factors that push them to excel.

“... It gives me goosebumps and it is when I’m negotiating or I’m going for business, I’m so excited for the competition. Imagine going against the guy who’s written twice what you’ve written the year before. The drive to win the business, to smash the vendor’s expectations out of the park is why I do it,” Mr Manning said.

While competitiveness is perhaps not a trait we are always encouraged to embrace, it can be helpful if you are able to utilise it in your career in a productive manner.

“I love doing the deals. I come from a family of six, five boys and I’m just extremely competitive,” Mr Phillips said.

“I do love doing the deals. Ever since I was in leasing 10 years ago, I loved doing the mini deals and it hasn’t changed.”

The second part of this drive is passion, something Mr Manning knows a lot about. He said he is “unbelievably passionate about people”.

“I don’t want to just do deals, I want to smash them out of the ballpark.

“So every deal, I don’t care if it’s $800,000 or $30 million, I want to get the extra $200,000, get the extra $5,000 out of it. I think, hopefully, that’s where my reputation is going.”
