What is it that drives you to be the best? A million-dollar agent shares the story that motivates him to push through the barriers in his real estate career.

“I think a lot of people that become successful in real estate, they’re the ones that just keep going,” said Mat Steinwede, speaking at AREC 2016.

Self-belief and strong focus are the two key elements in a successful real estate career, according to Mr Steinwede, who used the example of Roger Bannister breaking the four-minute mile in 1954 to prove that if you set your mind to something it can be achieved.

“The entire Earth, everyone on the planet said it was impossible, it couldn’t be done. But Roger did it,” he said.

The most interesting part of this success tale was that immediately after Bannister ran the mile, 30 other people completed it also, because seeing someone else do it convinced them they could too.

“When your ‘why’ is big enough, the challenges become smaller,” said Mr Steinwede, asking agents to assess what keeps them going every day, as this can help them overcome the challenges they might face on the path to success.

“There’s a lot of bumps along the way,” he said, adding that agents can choose to get caught up in the things that go wrong or they can take the energy from those into their next challenge.

“What’s that thing that’s driving you? Because I think that’s the most important question in real estate. What’s that reason that you’re going to get out of bed every day? And how much do you believe that you’re going to achieve it? Because I think success, success in real estate, is more mental … [it’s] what you’re prepared to do,” said Mr Steinwede.
