Despite taking over the family business as principal last year, Queensland’s top property manager once again managed to beat the competition for the fourth time at the state-based Excellence Awards last week.
Seven-time finalist, and four-time winner of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) Excellence Award for Property Management Katie Knight told Residential Property Manager how she recently became principal of the RE/MAX Success Toowoomba office.
“Having success in this industry comes down to really having a passion for what you do. We’ve been a family-based business, which I’ve just taken over from my father, so having that interest in the business does play a big part of it," she said.
“He’s still with us in a sales role, and he’s just finished his best year yet in terms of commission and sales.”
While taking over the sales side of the business may seem like a big jump from managing just one division, Ms Knight claims it hasn’t been too difficult.
“We’ve been leading up to this for quite some time – it was our succession plan. While there have been a few changes in the day-to-day operation, the beast just continues on as it always has,” she said.
Ms Knight and her team have managed to organically grow the rent roll to 1,480 properties through referral business.
But if the Toowoomba office had listened to head office, Ms Knight claims there wouldn’t have even been a property management department to begin with.
“RE/MAX are traditionally sales-based offices, and at the time, we were told to not have a property management department. [Former principal] Ian said ‘No, this is going to be the asset base of my business’ and did his own thing – as he always does," she said.
“He was instrumental to the growth in the early stages, he fostered systems and processes so we have a really strong connection between the two departments, which has made my job now as principal that much easier.”
