Q&A: Beth McKenna, Professionals Arthur Johnston Snowball

Beth McKenna has always had an interest in real estate and hope to take her career further by passing on the lessons she's learnt and mentoring industry newcomers.

When did you first join the PM industry? 

2011.

Why did you join the PM industry?

To further my career in real estate.

What were you doing before PM?

Working in administration at the reception desk.

What would you like your next career step to be?

Mentor an inexperienced property manager as I was mentored when I first started.

What piece of technology do you find the most useful for your business and why?

Property Inspection Manager (PIM) app produces more professional inspection reports, emails to our phones and helps with returning calls while we are out and about.

What area of PM needs more training focused on it and why?

I think we are trained and kept up to date in most areas, but as new compliances come in training in these areas would be helpful.

What skills does a PM/BDM need to be successful?

Organisation and time management, good communication and conflict resolution skills.

Where do you believe PM’s responsibilities should start and end?

Identifying potential risks to the property (such as maintenance and rent arrears), relaying that to the owner and then carrying out their instructions to deal with these issues.

How do you deal with disgruntled and aggressive tenants?

Staying calm and try not to take it personally.

What would you be doing if you weren’t in the PM industry?

Studying nutrition or remedial massage.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Every day is different. There are so many different areas of the job and it’s a continual learning curve.

What are the most stressful aspects of your job?

Dealing with confrontation.

How do you relax after a stressful day at work?

Not overthinking the day and doing something I enjoy.

How would you describe a perfect property management day?

Where everything goes to plan and all tasks I’ve aimed to complete are completed, perfect routine inspection and no confrontation (in other words, all happy clients).
