YouTube: Classic comedy’s take on landlord humour

19 January 2016 Jay Garcia

This week’s YouTube clip is taken from the 1988 comedy Coming to America starring Eddie Murphy as the prince of Zamunda, a fictional wealthy African nation.

In the scene below, Frankie Faison plays the landlord of a derelict apartment building in Queens, New York where Prince Akeem, Eddie Murphy’s character, has recently relocated to find a wife.

Prince Akeem wishes to find a down-to-earth bride by disguising his wealth and stature and seeking ‘meagre accommodation’.

The landlord highlights some of the features of the building, including a grotesque communal bathroom and a room where a homicide took place.
