Angie Laliotitis enjoys meeting new and colourful characters through her role, working in Sydney’s inner west.

When did you first join the PM industry?

I started working in real estate in 1991 as a receptionist in an office in Kingsford.

Why did you join the PM industry?

I wasn’t working at the time and I was helping out a friend because he was short-staffed. That was the beginning of it all!

What were you doing before PM?

I worked for a travel wholesaler and, once the Gulf War started in 1990, it completely slowed down the industry and I was retrenched.

What would you like your next career step to be?

I would love to train younger staff members joining property management.

What piece of technology do you find the most useful for your business and why?

Email; it’s quick and people have access to emails all day.

What area of PM needs more training focused on it and why?

Communicating the changing laws and tribunal expectations. Things change so much in our industry that we need to keep up.

What skills does a PM/BDM need to be successful?

I really think it comes down to two key skills: organisation and time management. Everything else will flow on if you can nail down those two skills first.

Where do you believe a PM’s responsibilities should start and end?

Our responsibilities start as soon as you list the property for rent, and I don’t ever think it ends unless you stop managing the property.

How do you deal with disgruntled and aggressive tenants?

Great question! I explain to them calmly that I’m here to help them and I need them to tell me the issue so I can put steps in place to fix it.

What would you be doing if you weren’t in the PM industry?

I would love to work at the airport; they are such exciting places full of possibility and adventure!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Meeting new people from all walks of life. Newtown is perfect for that.

What are the most stressful aspects of your job?

When I can see both sides of the story between a tenant and landlord, but someone gets disappointed and I get blamed.

How do you relax after a stressful day at work?

Spending time with my children and hearing about their day; it always puts a smile on my face no matter what kind of day I’ve had.

How would you describe a perfect property management day?

A perfect day in property management is when the inbox and in-tray are empty at the end of the day, landlords are happy and tenants are happy, inspections are up to date and you receive some positive feedback.
