4 ways to be a better PM

Property management tips

Get more joy from your job and get more done.

Jacob Ohlson, founder of PowerNET IT Solutions, has provided some tips for overcoming career road blocks to RPM’s sister publication My Business on the My Business Podcast.

Customers come first
Mr Ohlson, who’s first two clients have stayed with his business for more 20 years, says if you prioritise customer service you will have customers for life.

“That’s where [my] business has grown over 22 years, because by providing that constant good-quality service every single day, they stay with you.”

Impressing clients with your service is also going to result in more referral business, something many PMs strive for but struggle to achieve.

Be prepared to let go
As you climb the career ladder or build your business, you need to accept that you won’t be able to control everything. Speaking on his growing business, Mr Ohlson said, “Now it’s good that I don’t have to know everything.”

The temptation to micromanage can be strong for people who are used to being across every aspect of their work, but delegating less important tasks and learning to allow others to handle them will help you enjoy your work and boost your productivity.

Embrace change
“I’ve had to change management because I haven’t been happy with who I’ve been with and working with,” Mr Ohlson said. He encourages people to embrace change, especially if something doesn’t feel right in their business.

If you are coming into work every day and not enjoying it, find out why and don’t be afraid to challenge that factor. You will work harder in a job you love, so it’s important to make that a priority.

Remember your passion
“You cannot work crazy hours a day … and love doing it if you don’t have a passion,” Mr Ohlson said.

He credits his success to hard work, dedication and luck, saying that loving his work is what makes him strive to improve.

“I was just very lucky to find something that I have a passion for … it keeps me more and more engaged and interested.”
