Are you mistaking busyness with business? The two are vastly different concepts, and both of them aren’t always productive.
Before she reassessed her working style, Kate Strickland, Marshall White director found she felt incredibly busy but wasn’t actually achieving her targets or being productive.
“Are you the one that just runs around the hallway at work ... always hectic, always hectic? That used to be me,” Ms Strickland said at AREC 2016.
“I’d just run around going ‘I’m under the pump, I’m so stressed, I’m so stressed’, wandering around the hallways looking for an ear to spew on,” she said.
If this working style sounds familiar to you, you might be guilty of being busy for the sake of being busy, and a reassessment of how you manage your day may be in order.
A key technique to assessing if you’re being productive instead of just busy is calculating how many important tasks you actually complete in the day, rather than just thinking about how busy you felt.
“Did I put a new property in my pipeline? Did I get something closer to a sale? Did I do a great listing presentation? … Make sure that you’re using your time efficiently and doing good business,” Ms Strickland said.
She went on to say that when people are on their deathbed, they rarely wish they had worked more. Ms Strickland said taking on more until you feel overwhelmed will not benefit you in the long run.
“We need to think about what we’re really all about. What is your objective? Living to work or working to live?”
