The silly season can be a busy time for PMs and while you may want to be at home enjoying a BBQ with your loved ones, it’s likely you’ll have to deal with more than one tenant crisis over the Christmas break. Here are the most common holiday emergencies you need to be aware of.
“For many Australians, Christmas is a time to spend at home with family and friends for some hard-earned downtime. But having family or friends around the house over the festive season can increase the likelihood of accidents happening at home,” Mapfre Assistance’s head of partnerships and distribution, Grant Kean, says.
“Over the festive season, tradies can go from being expensive to blowing out the Christmas budget. It can also be difficult to get reliable help as tradies go on holidays or charge more for simple call outs throughout the day.”
Mapfre Assistance – a firm that provides home emergency services – compiled a list of the most likely household emergencies you can expect this holiday period.
1. Air-conditioner meltdowns
As temperatures rise, air-conditioning units are under greater pressure to keep families cool. Having a good air-conditioner repairman on your books can be a lifesaver during the summer period.
2. Broken windows
Whether it’s sports in the backyard or a couple of summer drinks resulting in clumsy behaviour, broken windows can really put a dampener on the festive period. Safety is key when talking a tenant through dealing with a broken window. You don’t want an emergency visit to the hospital on top of window repairs.
3. Plumbing problems
Over the holiday season, visiting relatives and Christmas parties will result in more people going through your home than usual. It’s worth checking in advance whether your plumber is available over the holiday period for all those emergency call-outs.
An increase in air-conditioning use or faulty Christmas lights can cause power outages, especially in older properties. PMs should expect a rise in calls about power failures or issues with fuse boxes during the holidays.
