Don’t go to a conference like AREC 2018 expecting to like every single speaker, but do expect to hear one or two or a few that will make a big difference to your success in real estate, according to consistent REB Top 100 Agent and AREC 2018 speaker James Tostevin.
Mr Tostevin said that there will be some speakers that may not appeal to you or fail to touch on the insights you’re looking for.
“But there will be other fantastic people speaking where you will glean additional, or new, information on how to be more successful,” Mr Tostevin told REB.
“Where you think ‘I haven’t thought of doing it that way’. It could be a script, it could be a number of different scripts. It could just be a strategy that is something you’re not currently doing. It can just provoke some fresh ideas and thought about approaching your career a bit differently.”
This is the reason why he hasn’t missed an AREC in the 20 years it’s been running.
“What agents learn, have learnt and will learn moving forward is from the range and variety of speakers that are on offer.”
But Mr Tostevin said that simply attending the conference and listening to the speakers is not enough.
“Clearly, it’s a matter of what action you take beyond going to these conferences.
“So, it’s all very well to learn on the spot, but I think the benefits that are on offer to me revolve around; within two or three days, assessing what you have learnt at AREC and what you are going to put into place.”
He said that if you don’t do that, it’s going to limit what you have actually learnt and limit the benefit of having attended it in the first place.
“Sit down with a small group — a big group is okay, too — but a small group is more appropriate, and say ‘what are the things we got from AREC, what are the things we can put into place immediately and what are the things we can gradually work into our business’?
“Because it’s easy to be motivated for a day, or a week, by a conference like AREC. But what are you going to place that is going to make a real difference that is going to have a profound impact on your career.”
