Don't get age be a barrier to success: director

Young agents should not allow concerns about their age impact on the success they can achieve in the industry, according to an awarding winning principal.

Managing director of Harcourts Coastal Dane Atherton said age could sometimes be a cause of insecurity for young agents starting out.

“Whether you’re 20 years old or 70 years old, the fundamentals of real estate don’t change,” he said. “If anything, being young and enthusiastic and full of energy you’ve got to learn to see that as an advantage at a listing table instead of a disadvantage.

“If your mindset is ‘I’m young, I hope they give me a chance’ that’s the wrong mindset. The right mindset is ‘Age isn’t important, I’m enthusiastic, I’ve got a lot of energy and I don’t take a lot of things for granted’.”

Agents who had been in the business for a long time could sometimes not prepare properly and appear complacent, which was an opportunity for young agents.

“Just get in there and do things bigger and better than everyone,” he said.

Mr Atherton was 19 when he started in real estate and said at the start he was reactive to results.

“My emotions would be up and down based on sales. If I had a great sales month, I would be on a cloud nine so I was relying more on outcomes for my emotions.

“If I could give advice to myself now, I would say look all of the outcomes and the results are none of the business, just the actions, so if I do all of the actions, the results take care of themselves and that gives you a more measured and consistent approach. That’s what you have to learn and that’s a probably big thing when you’re young.”

Mr Atherton will be the guest speaker at the upcoming Young Real Estate Professionals (YREP) event next month where he will talk about how agents can improve their performance and stay focus.

Previous speakers have included director of Richardson&Wrench Elizabeth Bay and Potts Point Jason Boon, director and business owner at McGrath Estate Agents Matt Steinwede, and managing director of Jetts Group Adrian McFedries.

The fourth YREP event will be held at the Tank Stream Bar on February 12 starting at 6PM.
