Architectus and Conrad Gargett, two of the country’s leading architecture and design firms, have decided to combine operations with the aim of continuing growth to further expand their national market share.

As a single entity, Architectus with Conrad Gargett will become one of the country’s largest design firms with over 700 employees across seven studios. But the new firm’s directors said they are not stopping there.

Architectus CEO Ray Brown commented that the two businesses found common ground in their ambition to become “Australia’s leading national architecture and design practice”.

“This merger ensures we’re well on track to achieve this,” Mr Brown said.

But that was just the tip of the iceberg of what attracted the two brands.

“There was a lot that attracted us to Conrad Gargett: its established presence in Brisbane; deep sector expertise in health, defence, and heritage; and an outstanding reputation built over 133 years — but what’s most exciting is the ability to develop and attract the best talent in the industry,” Mr Brown explained.

“By integrating our teams, we’ll unlock so much potential for our clients who will have access to great talent, and staff will be connected to new mentors and career opportunities across a diverse and sustainable practice,” he said.

Conrad Gargett’s managing director, Lawrence Toaldo, agreed the merger meant big things for the firm’s existing clients and staff.

“With a national footprint and combined resource base, we’re in a strong position to scale up for new and existing opportunities,” Mr Toaldo said.

“In addition to the practical synergies we share with Architectus is the shared vision to create resilient and meaningful places for people. It’s terrific to be moving forward with a design philosophy to create this work together,” he added.

With the merger effective 5 April, integration of the two entities is underway and will roll out over the coming months. As part of this, Mr Toaldo has joined the Architectus Board and assumed the position of group director for defence, health and heritage.

Architectus with Conrad Gargett now boasts expertise across the sectors of education, transport, public, defence, health, heritage, urban futures, landscape architecture, commercial, residential and interior architecture.
