A Brownlow medalist and three-time AFL premiership winner is tackling a challenge of a different kind as he takes on a sales agent and auctioneer role for the first time.

Jason Akermanis, who some may know better as Brisbane Lions footballer “Aker”, has been announced as joining the Ray White Ascot team.

The new role also marks a return to Queensland for the Brownlow medalist and 248-game AFL veteran, who hasn’t lived in the Sunshine State for more than a decade.

“I’d been away from Queensland for 14 years and I decided, once my youngest Zoe came along and with all things COVID-19, it was time to give up trying through Q School with golf and start a new career,” he explained.

“Along with my wife, Megan, and my other two daughters, Charlotte and Sienna, we decided moving back to Brisbane would be best to be closer to lifelong friends and both our families.”

While the former footballer wanted a start “in a completely new industry”, his move into real estate is the product of an early appreciation for the sector.

“Thanks to my mum, I’ve always loved property. We weren’t very wealthy when I was growing up, but she taught me what was important when it came to real estate,” the agent explained.

In making the career transition, Mr Akermanis said that, first and foremost, he wanted a mentor: “Someone who could help me grow and potentially prosper in this industry, and I was fortunate that he put me in contact with one of the best in Dwight Ferguson at Ray White Ascot.”

He added that “being a family man, Ray White really aligned with my values, especially with Dwight because he understands the need for outstanding client service combined with family time at home”.

It’s clear that the former premiership player knows what it takes to reach the top of his game.

“Having a professional purpose, the ability to be autonomous in your career, and being given the opportunity to master your craft are key fundamentals to success,” Mr Akermanis has acknowledged.

“I’m excited to start this new path, to educate myself, and to grow as a sales agent. I’m looking forward to finding my place within the real estate industry, talking to people, getting to know them, and building relationships.”

For Ray White Ascot director Dwight Ferguson, the addition of Mr Akermanis is an exciting one.

“I’ve employed a lot of ex-athletes in the past and the vast majority of them have gone on to be a great success in the real estate industry.”

He expects his newest recruit to follow in their footsteps.

“I look forward to seeing him grow and progress along his new chosen career path,” Mr Ferguson said.
