The Best in Real Estate

Last month, leading professionals from the real estate industry assembled in Sydney for the inaugural Australian Real Estate Awards.

On Friday August 1, the inaugural Australian Real Estate Awards (AREAs) was held at Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal, with Domain supporting the event as principal partner. The awards acknowledge the achievements of the best real estate agents, property managers, groups and independents in Australia.

More than 400 guests attended this year’s luncheon which was hosted by comedian Vince Sorrenti.

This was a true industry awards event, open to every professional across the real estate industry, and one that was well overdue. Real Estate Business received over 750 award submissions from real estate agents, property managers, groups and independents, all hoping to be recognised among Australia’s best in one or more of the 20 award categories.

Speaking to Real Estate Business at the event, Douglas Driscoll, CEO of Starr Partners – winner of the Best Innovator accolade – said the awards luncheon ‘ticked all the boxes’.

“I think the awards were spot on,” he said. “I thought the timing was right, the venue, the MC was right and all the people that turned up were in good spirits.

“It really seemed that egos were left at the door and people were there to have a good time.”

Damien Cooley of Cooley Auctions, recipient of the Auctioneer of the Year award, said he was thrilled to be a winner.

“It’s one of the great things about our industry that we get to work with so many wonderful clients, and it’s a testament to the quality of clients that we sell for and the combination of 10 years of building our business to where we are today,” he said after receiving his award.

Mr Cooley added that the AREAs was of value to the industry because it had national coverage.

“It’s a national award that is open to any auctioneer or any real estate agent across the country, so the beauty of that is that we really get to compete against the best in the industry and we feel that holds a lot of weight for us in winning new business,” he said.

All entrants were required to complete an online questionnaire as well as provide the judges with key business indicators.

The questionnaires were assessed against specific metrics and business performance parameters to determine a shortlist of finalists.

The shortlisted finalists were then asked to provide a submission with additional business information to support their nomination.

An independent judging panel, comprising respected professionals both inside and outside the industry, was assembled to assess the submissions. The judges were asked to provide an overall score based on business metrics and the submissions.

Several awards also involved face-to-face interviews, which were assessed alongside the submissions and business metrics to provide an overall result.
