REA Group has appointed Kieren Cooney to the newly-created role of chief marketing officer, with an aim to increase its global footprint.

Mr Cooney has more than 20 years of experience in senior marketing and telecommunications roles. He was most recently the CEO of Omnicom Interbrand.

He has also served as CMO for NBN Co and Telecom New Zealand.

Mr Cooney – whose appointment will take effect later this year – will report to REA Group CEO Tracey Fellows.

“The creation of the CMO role was designed to support REA Group’s expanding global footprint as well as its growth into property related services,” Ms Fellows said.

“Over the years, realestate.com.au has grown to become a much-loved brand among people looking to sell, rent or buy their home. There’s a tremendous opportunity to build on that brand in sectors that represent a natural extension of what we do well.

“We are excited by what Kieren can offer the business with his world-class experience. He will drive our global marketing strategy.

Mr Cooney said the chance to be part of a firm that wanted to help people navigate one of the biggest decisions of their lives appealed to him.

“However, it was my interactions with the REA team, who are as welcoming as they are impressive, that really sealed the deal for me,” he said.

The creation of the CMO role will also require executive general manager  media, Elizabeth Minogue, to focus on the growth of REA’s media and news/lifestyle content experience from a global perspective.
