For most of us, the last few weeks have disrupted our normal routines from where we work and where we get our coffee to who we work with or when we work. It can be hard to adjust to new routines, and like any change, the first few weeks are the hardest.

What I’ve found has helped me and many of the agents I coach is looking at this as a rare opportunity to completely rework your daily routine to ensure you maximise your efficiency.

To be a high-performing, efficient agent, it is crucial to match your energy levels to your activities throughout the day. This will generate the best returns on your time and effort, and will even make your day go more smoothly.

Daily routines can, and should, be highly personalised. Here are my recommendations for structuring your day from home.

  1. Plan your day the night before.
  2. Kick-off with a productive early morning.
  3. Begin work with high-energy activities.
  4. Use your afternoon to do lower-energy activities.
  5. The tailend of the day is for follow-up.
  6. Relax and start again.

Plan your day the night before

Use your night productively to organise your next day — even prepare your meals. This is important for your peace of mind so you can get the best sleep possible and wake up feeling re-energised and ready to take on the day.

Kick-off with a productive early morning

Waking up early is an important step to maximising your day. Get up and exercise, hydrate, eat well, inform yourself about current events and spend time with family if you can. The start of the day sets the entire tone for what follows, so use every tool at your disposal to ensure it’s productive.

Begin work with high-energy activities

After a productive morning routine, you will have plenty of energy to engage in shorter, sharper activities. For me, this is usually a team huddle over video chat or conducting prospecting and seller calls. Making the most of your high energy level will largely contribute to changing the rhythm of your day. It will also help you overcome a possible lack of energy in the afternoon.

Use your afternoon to do lower-energy activities

Once you’ve refuelled your body and mind with a meal, you may have slightly lost your alertness. Don’t panic! Surprisingly, this can be a very good time for tasks that require creative or problem-solving skills. This could include longer phone calls or in-person conversations and strategic planning. Harness your analytical mind in the afternoon to maximise your day.

The tailend of your day is for follow-up

To be able to truly relax after work, try to make any pending follow-up phone calls before you end your day. I like to get outdoors and take a walk while I do this. Spending this time following up in a pleasant setting allows me to start unwinding. Once back home from my walk, I make sure to take time out to repeat my first routine guideline and plan my day, before enjoying the evening with my family.

Relax and start again

This strategic use of energy throughout the day allows me to always stay productive. Even without the structure of an office, I still manage to achieve all my daily goals. This, in turn, enables me to fully relax after work and enjoy better-quality time with my family. I get a good night’s sleep and follow these steps again.

Following these tips will help you stay or become a high-performing agent even when working from home. This time at home is a blessing in disguise, because it allows us to reflect on our current daily routines, and therefore optimise them.
