The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) is charging its members and the broader community alike to raise their paddles in an upcoming auction to support flood victims.

The body will be donating the proceeds of the fundraising initiative to the charities Beddown and inCommunity, both of which provide housing and homelessness support services and are currently working to ensure flood-affected families and individuals have a roof over their heads.

Already the community has risen to the challenge, with businesses like PEXA, 99 Bikes, and Robert White Jewellers donating or sponsoring the items that will hit the block.

Auction participants will be able to vie for such prizes as a luxury Spicers Retreat, a diamond ring, or a drink with AFL legend Jason Akermanis over the course of the auction, which will be staged online from 11 to 13 April and live on 13 April.

In introducing the initiative, REIQ chief executive Antonia Mercorella underscored the severity of the housing shortage in the state.

“The recent flood disaster has resulted in thousands of properties being impacted by the floods, with many being rendered uninhabitable and as a result, displacing residents from their homes,” she said.

“Queensland already had historically low vacancy rates, and with the floods further reducing rental market stock, it can be incredibly challenging for people to find a suitable place to live.

“One of the ways the REIQ is showing its support is by leading a flood support auction to raise funds for Beddown and inCommunity, who provide a range of services for people experiencing homelessness.

She invited participants from the real estate industry and beyond to put their best foot forward in support of the cause.
