The Real Estate Institute of Victoria has elected its new leader.

Andrew Meehan will take on the top job for the next 12 months, flanked by Jacob Caine and Megan Mander as senior vice-president and vice-president, respectively.

Mr Meehan, a Mornington Peninsula local, said he is honoured to lead the institute “in one of the most important periods for the property sector”.

Having served as an REIV director for the past two years and having held a number of roles, including senior vice-president and vice-president, Mr Meehan succeeds Richard Simpson in the presidential role, with Mr Simpson set to remain on the board.

A licensed real estate agent and a qualified surveyor, Mr Meehan first entered the real estate sector in 2008, as director of Nicholas Lynch Real Estate Group.

Prior to this, the REIV reports that he held senior management positions and directorships in a variety of sectors, including with ASX-listed companies.

Speaking of his new appointment, Mr Meehan said he is “delighted to preside over the development of REIV’s governance and strategy, as we represent the best interests of our members and real estate participants more broadly”.

The incoming president has acknowledged that a looming state election for Victoria “coincides with a confluence of critical market-shaping forces”.

“From rising interest rates and inflation to a renewed focus on taxation, opportunity exists for the sector to galvanise and work together as it engages state government and other sector stakeholders on key property policy issues,” he remarked.

“It has to be remembered how significant the property sector’s contribution is to our state economy. The industry employs more than 15,000 Victorians, injects more than 20 per cent of gross state product ($76 billion) and more than 40 per cent of the state government’s annual tax revenue.”

Continuing, the new president expressed: “We eagerly await outcomes from the Andrews government’s Property Market Review, so that there can be some certainty in the way the sector is regulated and supported into the future.

“I look forward to working with my fellow directors, CEO Quentin Kilian and his team as, together, we continue the evolution of the REIV and advance this great sector even further.”
