How satisfied are property professionals with their jobs?

A recent report on workplace attitudes in Australia suggests that property services ranks highly in almost every data point, except for one.

For employers across the nation, the topic of workplace wellness is a perennial question. The latest report from NAB Behavioral Insights charted the evolving intentions and attitudes of employees in the second quarter of 2023.

The report compared workers across 32 industries and found that property services workers consistently reported themselves as being more satisfied, productive and loyal than the average Australian worker.

According to the report, 72 per cent of property services workers have been in the same job for over two years. This is substantially higher than the cross-industry average of 57 per cent, coming second only to wholesale workers.

Generally, the report stated that “job change remains much more fluid among younger age groups with almost one in two workers aged between 18 and 29 changing jobs within the past 12 months”.

As for the number of property services employees who are considering leaving their current place of employment, the number declined to a modest 12 per cent in the second quarter of 2023, compared to the national average of one in four workers.

When it comes to job satisfaction, however, property services did not fare so well. In total, only 2 per cent of property professionals said they are “very satisfied” with their jobs – the lowest of all 32 industries.

On average, however, the property sector ranks job satisfaction at a fairly high score of 7.5 out of 10, indicating that perhaps property employees are more reticent to give high ratings, rather than actively discontented across the board.

And it appears that people skills are serving property employers well, with 62 per cent of employees reporting they are “very satisfied” with their current employer, the second highest ranking after government.

One aspect of work that has been subject to a particular buzz in recent years is, of course, working remotely. Currently, property services workers spend about a third of their week working from home, a slight decline from 39 per cent this time last year.

Given that property professionals report they ideally wish to spend about half the week working from home, there is still a way to go in meeting employees’ preferences.

In good news, the NAB report found that “the highest share of workers who think they are as productive at home are in Property Services (where eight in 10 believe they are productive)”. This is a massive step up from the cross-industry average, where only 59 per cent reported they are as productive at home as in the office.

Finally – and perhaps most importantly – over seven in 10 property workers feel they have a good work/life balance.
