The question that can change your life

I’m going to kick off with a harsh reality: What we get out of life is not determined by the good feelings we desire, but by the bad feelings we’re willing and able to sustain in order to get us to those good feelings.

In other words, success and the career we want are not created via the big dreams we have and the things we wish for. Instead, it comes down to the effort and work we’re prepared to put in to make those things a reality.

The real question you need to ask yourself (and it’s a tough one) then becomes: What pain are you willing to sustain over an indefinite period to achieve whatever it is you truly want?

Yes, sorry to say there is no magic fix. There are no rainbows and unicorns waiting to shepherd you to your dreams.

But within the answer to that question lies the path you need to take to get what you truly want and a clear definition of exactly what it is that you’re looking for.

It’s a big question but a powerful one, and it’s one that can change your life.

There is no magic pill

Just consider this, you might want an amazing physique. But you’re well aware you don’t end up with one unless you legitimately appreciate the pain, physical stress and discipline that come with visits to the gym and watching what you eat.

Not only do you need to appreciate that pain and discipline; you need to embrace it, experience it and commit to it if you want to actually achieve that amazing physique.

The same applies with our work.

What we get out of each work week is not determined by the results we desire, but by the discipline and tough tasks we’re willing and able to sustain to get us to those results.

It’s the commitment to consistently undertake the basics including the prospecting calls, the “just touching base” conversations, the marketing, the networking, the appraisals, the listing presentations, the buyer nurturing, the follow-up etc.

There is no gain without the pain of the mundane and the routine. You know it, I know it, and the best in the business live by that philosophy.

It’s only when we undertake those tough tasks that we get the good feelings associated with the car, house, lifestyle, business, travel, work/life balance, or financial security for our family that we dream of.

So, what pain are you willing to sustain over an indefinite period to achieve whatever it is you truly want in this industry?

There’s more to this than meets the eye

The answer to that question says more about you than your desires and fantasies.

The answer requires you to choose something. You can’t have a pain and sacrifice-free life. It can’t all be roses, clover, rainbows and sunny days.

Effort will be needed, an investment of time is a must and work will be required. The answer to that question will actually get you somewhere.

It will define what you’re willing to do, why you’re willing to do it, and how you intend to get where you want to go.

In other words, it’s the question that can change your life.
