The state institute has chosen Barry Johnston to fill the seat being vacated by Peter Matthews.

A veteran of the industry, having made his start in real estate over three decades ago, Mr Johnston founded the North Sydney-based agency Balmoral Partners in 1997 with a specialisation in commercial property services.

With experience as an agent, Mr Johnston has built a reputation as a trusted consultant working for a broad range of clients including private individuals, listed property trusts, not-for-profit organisations and multinational companies.

And Mr Johnston brings a familiarity working directly with the government to the role, having served on the former State Authorities Superannuation Board.

He has been a member of the board for the past nine years, and hosted the Real Estate Institute of NSWs (REINSW) inaugural Commercial Agent Summit, which took place this past November.

In outlining his priorities, Mr Johnston noted that training and support would be a key focus for the REINSW under his leadership.

“It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to lead the peak body for the industry in our state and to collaborate with the institutes across other jurisdictions to address the challenges and opportunities for people who work in real estate and for consumers too,” Mr Johnston said.

“In 2024 and beyond, we intend to increase the scope of training and support we provide agents, including a renewed focus on commercial agent training for our members.

“We will also continue to work closely with government to ensure the industry’s perspective on new legislation is heard, in support of practical, workable outcomes for real estate practitioners and consumers,” he added.

Mr Johnston’s two-year tenure as president begins this December.
