The financial exec brings experience from across the grocery, home goods and hardware sectors to the role.

The First National Real Estate network has named Robin Johnston as its new chief financial officer, highlighting how his background working with firms that support independent business owners will be a benefit to the brand.

Johnston comes to the position with more than 30 years in senior finance roles that have spanned the sectors of retail, wholesale distribution, logistics and consumer goods. Most recently, he served as the CFO of Forty Winks.

At the bedding retailer, he is credited with implementing strategic financial initiatives that strengthened the company’s market position and drove substantial growth.

Johnston also held senior roles at Metcash Hardware Division and IGA Supermarkets, which First National cited as proof of his “commitment to empowering independent operators”.

David Edwards, chief executive officer of First National Real Estate, said the leadership team was “thrilled to welcome Robin Johnston to the First National Real Estate family”.

“His extensive experience and proven track record in financial management and corporate governance make him an invaluable addition to our leadership team. Robin’s expertise will be instrumental in enhancing our cooperative’s competitive edge and fostering sustainable growth for our members.”

On his part, Johnston said he was glad to be joining the company, particularly with its focus on helping independent agents succeed.

“I am excited to join First National Real Estate, an organisation that champions the success of independent professionals. I look forward to leveraging my experience to drive innovation and support the network’s continued growth,” Johnston said.

The CFO’s appointment comes roughly six months after the network placed Edwards in the top job of CEO. With background across retail and franchising, Edwards also counts experience at Forty Winks within his CV.
