Renters in Victoria continue to receive state support, with Consumer Affairs Victoria launching new rental services to strengthen advice, advocacy, and protection for some of the state’s most vulnerable residents.
Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) has announced the introduction of a new Victorian Renter Rights Program, set to launch later in 2026, to enhance the state’s existing support systems and deliver more dedicated support.
The program, developed in response to a recent review of CAV’s funded renting and financial counselling services, will allow renters to access advice and support through the newly implemented “Renter Rights Service” and the “Victorian Renter Helpline.”
The said program will also establish greater support for renters over 55 with the introduction of the “Older Persons Housing Rights Service”, as well as for frontline workers and multicultural communities through the “Renter Central Service.”
Additionally, it will provide almost double the existing government funding for renter support, increasing to $98 million over the next five years.
The increase in spending comes as renter support spending reached a record high of $10.2 million in the most recent financial year.
Minister for Consumer Affairs Nick Staikos said it will continue to enhance protections for renters in an already well-supported market.
“Victoria is the best state in Australia for renters with more than 1,650 reforms introduced to make renting fairer and more affordable for the almost one-third of Victorians who rent,” Staikos said.
“These services mean more Victorians will have the support, advocacy, and advice they need.”
“We know that cost of living is front of mind for many Victorians, and this government will always have their backs.”
CAV forecast that, once operational, the new program would assist around 25,500 clients a year, almost double the 12,663 who used the services in 2024 to 2025.
