A real estate agent appeared as one of the grooms on Married at First Sight’s 13th season, sparking drama and tears in his first-ever episode.
This week, Australia’s wedding experiment show, Married at First Sight (MAFS), has launched its 13th season with a real estate agent among the participants.
Originally from the UK, Daniel “Danny“ Hewitt first worked as a tradie before shifting careers, becoming a real estate agent in Ashburton, Victoria and appearing on reality TV.
While Hewitt recorded $5,530,000 in transactions across seven sold property listings over the past 12 months, according to RateMyAgent, his quest for love had been ongoing.
On February 4, he “married” on MAFS, and while the agent boasts “exceptional communication skills”, he’s already caught in the TV crossfire by making his bride Rebecca “Bec“ Zacharia cry and allegedly threatening a paparazzi.
During his vow, the 34-year-old realtor mentioned wanting a “Bonnie and Clyde” relationship, hoping his wife would bail him out if he ever got locked up in jail, which didn’t go well with his partner.
His TV wife was visibly upset by the comments, crying and rattled by being matched with someone who could be “acting a fool to the point of getting arrested”.
“I’ve given up everything, everything, everything, and you’re mentioning getting arrested in your vows?” she said on the show.
As the tears kept falling, she told the producers she could feel the relationship wouldn’t work.
While the first episode saw Hewitt in a three-piece suit, the agent covered in tattoos who calls himself a “teddy bear” made headlines last year for allegedly threatening a photographer.
Last August during the show production, Hewitt, who was photographed leaving Bondi Icebergs, allegedly threatened news and entertainment photographer Ben McDonald to “smash” his camera.
Contacted by REB, McDonald said the incident had been recorded and appeared to be a “storm in a teacup”.
“I think he’s probably had a few drinks and was feeling a bit larger than life, which we see this kind of thing a lot. And the egos were at an all-time high, and he’s just decided to say something stupid.”
“But it’s a precedent in the sense that it’s the first time we’ve had threats like that from a mass contestant,” McDonald told REB.
McDonald said that in the days following the interaction, he continued working around the hotel where the contestants were, and Hewitt allegedly continued to give him a bit of “the eye”.
“But nothing more came of it. Probably realised his error later on or whatever.”
McDonald said he won’t press further charges against Hewitt, as he was the target this time.
“I could stand my own ground if it were someone else there, then perhaps, it might’ve been different, and I certainly wouldn’t have liked any of my other photographers to be exposed to that.”
With MAFS just starting to air, Hewitt is set to appear in more episodes as his relationship with his TV wife continues.
