Agents know how fussy buyers can be, so advising potential vendors to make these clever fixes can help you win more listings and significantly ramp up your earnings.
1. Fix mould and remove all damp
Property expert at financial comparison site Mozo, Steve Jovcevski, said sellers may think they need to invest tens of thousands of dollars to upgrade the kitchen or bathroom, but new research shows that mould and damp are more of a turnoff for potential buyers than an old kitchen.
“This isn’t too surprising given a lot of buyers like to add their own style to a space, so an unrenovated kitchen or bathroom could be a drawcard for them,” Mr Jovcevski said.
2. Install clever lighting
More than a third of potential buyers said dark rooms and poor natural lighting would be deal-breakers. To mitigate this, Mr Jovcevski suggested installing skylights.
3. Find storage solutions
Lack of storage also made the top 10 list for turnoffs, with 14 per cent of potential buyers saying they would walk away from a property if it lacked adequate storage space.
“It could be worth installing shelving or under-stair storage,” Mr Jovcevski said.
4. Paint the rooms white
Small rooms round out the top five deal-breakers. Mr Jovcevski said painting the walls white is a good way to make rooms look bigger.
5. Get rid of bulky furniture
Similarly, removing bulky furniture and decluttering can make a small room appear bigger.
“Our results show how important it is to consider your market before putting a property up for sale,” Mr Jovcevski said.
“Only make the changes that will drive up value for those most likely to be interested in your home.”

The results came from a Pureprofile study, commissioned by Mozo, which surveyed 1,002 Australians.
