How to recover from a losing streak

Lost listings in real estate

Even the best agents go through rough patches and lose listings, clients and confidence. So how do you bounce back? The secret to not getting caught up in your losses might be in the way you handle your wins.

William Phillips, REBs 13th ranked agent in the Top 100 Agents and last years Young Gun spoke with Tom Panos at AREC 2016 about why it’s business as usual in his office – win or lose.

“I’ve had a fair few losing streaks, I think everyone has,” BresicWhitney director Mr Phillips said, adding that his office has a trick for dealing with lost listings.

“In our office the mentality is, and this has developed over a few years, we don’t get so beaten up over it,” he said.

BresicWhitney treats its losses the same way it treats its wins – it is all part of the job and nothing to get hung up on.

“To put it into perspective, if we win a listing in our office, whether it’s a million dollars or five million dollars, we don’t sit there celebrating it with a bottle of champagne,” Mr Phillips said.

While some agents might regard the celebration as one of the best parts of the win, Mr Phillips said his position gives his office better perspective on their losses and allows them to move on without taking too much of an emotional beating.

“It’s the same if you lose one. Learn from it and go back to what you were doing – win or lose, you just keep moving,” he said.

Something else that is worth keeping in mind is the fact that there are always more listings waiting to be picked up. Even if you win a listing, there is more you could be doing.

“The bar is always high. If you’ve won a listing, it’s good that you got it, on to the next one,” Mr Phillips said.
