No favours for women in the rough and ready world of real estate, says prestige Sydney agent

Real estate is not a gender-based industry, says one of the country’s top agents. It’s a skills-based industry and the top performers stay focused on what they’re good at.

“I never saw myself as being a woman in the business,” said Double Bay Laing+Simmons’ D’Leanne Lewis, ranked 10th in REB’s Top 50 Women for 2017, about when she began her career more than two decades ago.

“I saw myself as being an agent and how am I going to be a successful one,” Ms Lewis added, “and that’s still how I see myself now.”

Speaking on the REB Secrets of the Top 100 Agents podcast, Ms Lewis said that it was tough back then “just being anyone” in the business.

She just concentrated on getting on with the job and performing as well as she knew how.

“I’ve got a brain and I can talk, so I can be good at whatever I want to do,” the agent said.

“And that’s not based on if Im a woman or Im a man. So, Ive always had that same mindset, and I think the marketplace out there is intelligent enough not to differentiate. Its more about show me your results.”

Ms Lewis said that nobody is too good to work hard.

“Keep your head down, service, service, service,” the agent said.

“When someone calls you, call them back. Call them back the same day.”

She added that no matter how successful you get, you are only as good as your last sale.

“Because that is what people remember. Theres no point sitting at a listing appraisal and saying, ‘Oh, I sold this house in 1998’. They dont care; its about what youre doing currently and how good your service is and your results are.”

The job can become a grind, she said.

“Sometimes, you feel like a little mouse, churning, churning, churning,” Ms Lewis said.

“But thats what you need to do because your clients need to see that youre active, that youre focused, that youre getting the results.”

Ms Lewis also said that service and hard work are interlinked.

“You cant have one without the other and thats advice I got when I was starting out.

“I saw what people around me were doing and I made an active decision to do what the really good ones were doing. But I put my own spin on it, because we are all individuals.

“I made it work for me and work in a way that resonated with me, my personality, my soul, and I wanted to be true to that.”
