Consumer Affairs Victoria is cracking down on online scammers who are cheating prospective holiday makers this season.
According to a news alert released by Consumer Affairs Victoria there have been 26 reports of rental scams in the past year. Consumer Affairs expects there to be a jump in reports over the silly season.
Rental listings are a popular target for scammers said a spokesperson from Consumer Affairs Victoria.
“Scammer will post bogus listings which often look like genuine offers, including photos and real addresses of properties,” they said.
“When a holiday maker expresses interest, the scammer requests money - often via money transfer - or personal details up-front, to ensure they 'secure' the rental property.”
However rather than securing the dream holiday rental, you’ll either lose your money or open yourself up to identity theft.
This comes just months after Stayz, Takeabreak, Rentahome, the Holiday Letting Organisation and the Real Estate Institute of NSW (REINSW), along with a number of councils and government agencies including the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure and Destination NSW developed a Code of Conduct in an attempt to remove the need for government regulation of the sector.
