'Normal' working hours important to wellbeing

All property managers should be working ‘normal’ office hours, claims one property manager who has suffered with a mental illness for over 15 years.

Award-winning property manager and managing director of Focus Property Management, Bernie Mitchell believes a proper work-life balance is paramount to the wellbeing of property management staff.

“You’re job is never done; it is OK to go home on time,” he told Residential Property Manager.

“Whatever is there is still going to be there tomorrow and whatever you finished today, there is going to be more of the same tomorrow.

“Go home and relax, turn your email off and chill out, it’s what I do.”

Mr Mitchell was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1998. Just last month he opened up about his illness and working in real estate when he launched his book, Bipolar: a path to acceptance.

“Mental illness in the real estate sector is something I talk about a lot, after all it is a stressful job,” he said.

Mr Mitchell will also be speaking at the Leading Property Managers of Australia (LPMA) Conference on the Gold Coast on April 18 and 19.

“My talk will be all about being the best you can be,” he continued.

“I will be utlising key principals that I took from being unemployable to becoming a business owner.

“Targeting on time management, working less, being time productive and of course, mental illness.”
