Co-directors create even playing field

One NSW agency has found the secret to a cohesive sales and property management team comes from the top down.

Sarena Rowley from Dougmal Harcourts in Campbelltown recently earned the title of Top BDM for Harcourts NSW for the first quarter, and believes a well-synced team is the secret to success.

“We work very closely,” she said of the two departments, “we have an open office with around 30 staff in total and they refer us clients and property management refer them clients.

“I’m sure that in some offices there isn’t much communication, but I’ve worked here for 10 years and find that the two departments work well together.

“But I believe that has a lot to do with having two business owners who work within each department, so there isn’t one side favoured over the other in the eyes of staff - it makes for a cohesive environment.”

The office also topped the group for property management office revenue for the quarter.

The directors of the Campbelltown office, Garth and Laura Makowski, each specialise in a different department.

Mr Makowski is consistently ranked as one of the top agents in the state and in the Harcourts Australia network, while his wife, Laura, has a 25-year background in the property management field.

“To be a good BDM, I think you need to be a people person, as with any customer service role,” Ms Rowley said. “Well organised for sure and I find it's important to have a property management background because you need to be versatile and able to adapt to different people and environments.”
