Despite a recent survey revealing more landlords are open to accepting pets in properties than ever before, one WA property manager is finding pet-friendly rental homes exceedingly scarce.
The shortage of pet-friendly rental homes in Augusta-Margaret River is causing anguish for pet owners looking to relocate.
The Augusta-Margaret River Mail reports pets are definitely not welcome in a majority of rentals currently on the market in the area.
One couple looking for a new rental said they'd been looking for something for a couple of months, but "almost every single house we see advertised, including run-down beach shacks, bush cottages and newer places are all strictly no pets".
The couple added they can't figure out why there seems to be such an aversion to animals in a community that's so welcoming and every second person they see has an animal with them.
First National Real Estate senior property manager Robin Hopewell told Residential Property Manager it's becoming increasingly common for landlords to give a resounding 'definitely not' when it comes to renting out their properties.
"On our whole rent roll, to be honest, it is really hard to get some owners to accept pets,” said Ms Hopewell.
"They just don't want pets inside. The tenants will be in breech if we find out. Plus, the pet bond has gone up to $260, but that can’t be used for any damage the pet does. Landlord insurance just includes claiming for pet damage and it’s up to a limited amount,” she added.
