A famished thief has formed the basis of an unusual claim by whipping up a dish of spaghetti bolognese in the kitchen of a rental home.
After breaking into the Pacific Palms holiday home, the thief helped himself to ingredients left behind by the last tenants and washed the meal down with a stolen beer, according to Elkington Bishop Molineaux Insurance Brokers (EBM).
In addition to ransacking the locked storage room full of ingredients and beer, the thief also took a TV and antenna booster, leaving destruction in his wake.
The damage to the property, which included broken laundry and study doors, door handles, a damaged manhole and pictures which required rehanging, accounted for a majority of the insurance claim.
“As is so often the case, the largest losses weren’t the items stolen, but the damage done in the process of stealing them,” RentCover general manager Sharon Fox-Slater said.
This case also demonstrates the value of having someone to check on your holiday home when it is not being used, EBM said.
The burglary was only discovered when a gardener/cleaner visited the property, saw a truck parked nearby and noticed the house wasn’t clean.
The gardener/cleaner called the owners to see whether they were using the home but by the time they replied, the offender had departed (without doing the dishes).
The owners then contacted police and a payout of $3,000 was made to replace the stolen items and repair damage.
