Renting a French château is not as outrageous as one imagines – in fact you could be a guest at one of these ancient manors for as little as $40 a night.

Castle #1 - 14th century La Chevallerie Château

Overlooking the plain of Le Mans, this seven-suite castle has everything from horseback riding paths to car racing tracks.

If you're not the adventuring type, slip on your whites for a game on the grass tennis courts or stay indoors and indulge yourself in the art, decor and libraries.

Rent the entire property, which sleeps 14, for $2,100 a night (translation: everyone chip in $150), according to Airbnb.

Castle #2 - 17th century Château du Jonquay

Northwest of Paris, near the town of Boug-Archard, Château du Jonquay's exterior, acreage and formal gardens are undeniably dreamy, but its interiors are, well, spectacular.

Rent the entire property, which sleeps 24, for $1,200 a night (translation: everyone chip in $50), according to HomeAway.

Castle #4 - Château de Moiré

Encircled by vineyards and rolling hills, this castle, which is 35 kilometres from Lyon, is a sun-filled charmer. Spend your days swimming in the heated salt water pool or biking to one of the half dozen local wineries for tastings.

Rent the entire property, which sleeps 16-plus, for $573 a night (translation: everyone chip in $36), according to Airbnb.
