PM attitude drives outsourcing

A property management director has said the attitude of Australian property managers around mundane administration tasks pushes him to get them outsourced.

Pure Leasing director Cameron Ewers said he is all for outsourcing within reason since there are a lot of administration tasks within property management that are boring but need to be done.

“I outsource some minor, small administrative tasks to the Philippines,” he told Residential Property Manager.

“What drives that is the attitude of Australians.

“[The Philippines] do a better job and get paid 0.1 of a per cent for doing that task than my staff would do, but they won’t do it, or they don’t like doing it, or they whine about it and they think of every reason not to do it – and they don’t do as good a job with it because they don’t want to do it,” he added.

Mr Ewers said that is more and more the attitude on the really mundane and boring tasks.

“I think that, as a nation, is what we have become,” he said.

“Particularly in WA with the mining industry, where you can get $150,000 to drive a truck.

"Why would you want to work hard in a real estate office for between $50,000 and $100,000?

“So you are getting this really lazy breed of administrative workers, and that is what is pushing us over there,” he added.

Also speaking to Residential Property Manager, co-owner of Inspect Real Estate Andrew Reece said when you talk outsourcing, everyone assumes it means it is going overseas.

“Technically all of my clients have outsourced the handling of their tenant enquiries to me,” he said.

“You have to break that down  everyone thinks outsourcing is a dirty word because it is going to the Philippines.

“Even if it does go to the Philippines, I am a big believer that, what happens is first of all you go to the Philippines and they are doing it for $8 an hour but demand pushes it to $9, $10, $13,” he added.
