Public housing tenants whose visitors cause wilful damage to their homes or use them for illegal purposes have been warned such behaviour will not be tolerated.
Announcing amendments to Western Australia’s Department of Housing policy on illegal use of premises, housing minister Bill Marmion said tenants would now be held responsible for the behaviour of third parties in their homes.
“The cost to taxpayers and society of tolerating disruptive behaviour, wilful damage and illegal activity in public housing is too high,” Mr Marmion said.
“We will not allow tenants to use the excuse that they were unaware of what was taking place under their taxpayer-subsidised roofs.
“The message from the Liberal national government is that you will be held accountable for the actions of your visitors and householders,” he added
The minister said the department had three basic requirements of state housing tenants: pay their rent, look after their homes and get along with their neighbours.
“An overwhelming majority of our tenants do the right thing,” Mr Marmion said.
“For the small number who don’t, we’ve now removed any ambiguity about their responsibility for the activities in their homes.”
