New data has uncovered the Australian suburbs that command the highest weekly median rents.

Statistics provided by Corelogic RP Data for January 2015 revealed almost half the suburbs in the top 10 for highest weekly median rents were regional based – with the rest located in Sydney.

Two NSW suburbs tied for first place. Tamarama in Sydney and Killcare in the regional city of Gosford both averaged a weekly asking rent of $2,200.

Tamarama’s average asking rent jumped from $1,595 in January 2014, while Killcare’s fell from $2,450.

Double Bay and Vaucluse in Sydney both averaged a weekly asking rent of $1,850, which was up from $1,175 in January 2014 for Double Bay and $1,750 for Vaucluse.

Another Sydney suburb, Dover Heights, also averaged $1,850 for the weekly asking rent. However, it was a fall of $250 from January 2014.

The only suburb outside NSW to make the top 10 was Port Hedland in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

It averaged $1,800 for weekly asking rents, which was unchanged from January 2014.
