Having a mentor and being one to others can create a mutually beneficial relationship that lasts for years.
Kate Towerton, head of property investment management at Belle Property Mosman, said mentoring can give property managers a career boost.
“If you examine the leaders in our industry, the best of the best have mentors,” she told Residential Property Manager.
“I have learnt technical and leadership skills, prospecting techniques and from time to time got a bit of a kick in the butt by being held accountable for the results I have committed to.”
Ms Towerton said that because there are so many variables in property management, there is no one-size-fits-all training model.
As a result, having someone to bounce ideas off – particularly if they come from an outside party – can be a good way to deal with tricky property management situations, she said.
“And mentoring doesn't have to be PM-specific. Some of the best advice I have had from my mentors has been around life skills, leadership and mindset.”
Ms Towerton has assumed the role of both student and teacher in her years in the industry and found value in both.
“As a BDM, I have found that mentoring in the form of a structured coaching program has been well worth the investment,” she said.
“As a mentor, seeing someone you have nurtured succeed and grow makes you incredibly proud.”
