A new website, Parkhound, is helping home owners rent out their driveways and lawns to combat CBD parking issues.
Parkhound has more than 3,000 spaces listed Australia-wide with private car parks listed from $50 a week, while some motorists are locking down year-long rentals for as much as $4,000.
Brisbane is one of the site’s biggest markets. More than 40-50 new spaces are listed and 150-250 bookings are made every week.
This initiative brings relief to drivers who are getting tired of the lack of parking, as well as escalating prices and fines.
Motorists can book a space in one of Brisbane’s most expensive parking buildings for $3,900 a year through Parkhound, compared to $27,375 through a commercial parking vendor.
Despite the growing popularity of Parkhound, council warns that ‘black market’ rentals are illegal and people caught listing their property could be hit with fines or court dates.
Home owners could be hit with a fine of $1138 for individuals and $5692 for businesses.
While no infringements have been issued in the past 12 months, the council warns that previous culprits have been fined up to $70,000 for running illegal parking operations from their homes.
