An American couple has found a safe hidden underneath their kitchen containing masses of money, vintage booze and possibly a secret codebook – and have told the world via social media.

Imgur users Sarm and Eddie, from Arizona, had noticed a safe combination in the back of their medicine cabinet when they moved in but have only just now found the safe, according to The Telegraph.

They stumbled upon the safe while demolishing an island bench during a kitchen renovation.

The safe turned out to contain US$51,000 ($71,300) in $100 bills, an unopened bottle of James E Pepper whiskey marked from 1960 and a copy of A Guide for the Perplexed by E.F. Schumacher published in 1977.

According to Sarm, the book also contained possible clues to a treasure hunt, including a flashcard map marked with an X on the nearby town of Mesa and various underlined quotes from the book.
