An industry trainer has offered some easy and practical tips on how property managers can avoid burnout and work more efficiently.
Real estate coach John Highman said the best way to prevent burnout is to use “the power of the pencil” to take control of your day.
“Most people spiral out of control because they simply rely on what a computer throws at them; without any ability to write it down and sort it through, they’ll struggle,” he told RPM.
“If you write things down in pencil in a diary at the end of the day, it helps you see how you’re going to move through the next day, which means they can get into the office the next day and get straight into it.”
Another key aspect of preventing burnout is prioritising tasks to ensure the most important tasks are handled early, Mr Highman said.
“Property managers have to control their existing portfolio and their clients first and foremost, and then they can focus on new business,” he said.
“Many property managers will also find maintenance issues that pop up and portfolios that need to be addressed due to breakdowns and failures, so they have to be ready to take action for the unexpected.”
Mr Highman said an easy solution for property managers is to use Google for their email systems and Google Task for task management.
“They’re very simple programs and they’re all free, but the ability to tap that into a smartphone makes task management that little bit easier,” he said.
Mr Highman added that managing emails can take over a property manager’s day, so it should be controlled and monitored selectively.
“Emails should be looked at first thing in the morning to address any urgent issues, looked at around the middle of the day for any issues that have popped up during the morning, and then looked at again at the end of the day.”
