With constant talk about green buildings and sustainability, RPM has found some of the most promising eco-friendly projects from around the world.
Each of the photos below highlights an environmentally sustainable building that carries a range of features to help promote green building principles.
The first building featured is the Highland Green Discovery Center, in Louisville, Kentucky. It is part of a Gold LEED Certified development that features a green roof, rooftop solar farm, geothermal HVAC systems, bike racks, electronic car recharge station, and an ivy greenscreen for insulation.
Next is Park Royal Pickering Hotel in Singapore, which is the country’s first eco-friendly hotel. It has two square metres of greenery for every one square metre of total land area and has enough solar panels to be Singapore’s first zero-energy sky gardens.
The third is Ekouin Nenbutsudo Temple in Tokyo, which contains a planted colonnade of bamboo plants to filter out pollution and noise from the street.
Next up is Greenhost Hotel Yogyakarta in Indonesia, which is constructed largely out of recycled materials with fresh produce and herbs grown in the attic and corridors using planters fashioned from PVC pipes.
Thong House in Saigon is densely populated with rich vegetation and large openings with rotating panels to allow occupants to determine the required degree of privacy and sunlight.
Bosco Verticale in Milan is a pair of residential towers with 730 trees, 5,000 shrubs and 11,000 perennials and groundcover on its façades.
One Central Park in Sydney contains motorised mirrors that capture sunlight and direct rays to its gardens and features vertical gardens.
Helitrope in Freiburg was the first building in the world to capture more energy than it uses, all of which is entirely renewable, emissions free and CO2 neutral. The building rotates to track the sun in order to minimise energy use for heating and cooling.
