REINSW pushing for national industry initiative

Leaders in NSW have gathered to action professionalisation plans, with the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales pressing for a national scheme to be run by the Real Estate Institute of Australia.

REINSW president John Cunningham joined more than 60 leaders from across the country in vowing to change the industry’s image, and push for a refocus on the property consumer’s experience.

Mr Cunningham said while a good start has been made, there is still much work to be done.

“The path to gain formal professional recognition is a long one,” he said.

“But there is no need to wait until the framework is in place. We can put the leadership, culture, attitudes and behaviours in place now.”

After first identifying the need to reform the industry some years ago, first steps to do so were taken at last year’s REINSW Industry Summit, where the idea of ‘professionalism’ was first tabled. In March an advisory group was created.

“At the Property Professional Prelaunch Think Tank (July 2017) members of the industry were asked to make a choice: move ahead or be left behind,” Mr Cunningham said.

“The response from the industry was overwhelmingly in favour of making a monumental change and to join other industries that have successfully achieved professional standing in Australia including accountants and lawyers.”

Mr Cunningham said REINSW’s aim is to set high barriers for entry into the profession.

“We want a career in real estate to be something that you aspire to and need to work hard to achieve,” Mr Cunningham said.

An important part of the process will see changes to legislation around what is required to join the industry, the certificate of registration, the real estate licence and to be the Licensee-in-Charge.

Minister for Finance, Services and Property Victor Dominello has welcomed the initiative.

“We are trying to put real estate on a path to professionalism. One thing professionalism provides is a level of customer assurance as a client,” he said.
