University students will be given the opportunity to further develop one of Australia’s latest real estate apps.

Deakin University’s School of Information Technology in Melbourne and Gavl, a live auction app, have partnered up to allow eight students to work on developing the app.

Associate professor Dr Gang Li said that the experience was beneficial to their students.

“Working with Gavl will give our students unique insights and commercial experience in the innovative applications of big data, robotics, mobile games, artificial intelligence and live streaming technology,” Dr Li said.

Since its launch last year, Gavl claims to have broadcast over 5,000 auctions with 3.5 million views and has been downloaded in 50 countries.

The app was founded by former AFL player Joel Smith alongside Leith Donaldson and Michael Artup and raised $5.1 million in funding last year.

CTO of Gavl Leith Donaldson said that the partnership would enable Gavl to remain innovative in the industry.

“We’re committed to remaining at the forefront of the tech industry, so we’re on the hunt for the brightest talent to develop our world-leading technology,” Mr Donaldson said.

The students chosen from Deakin are undertaking the Industry Capstone Program, which sees final-year Bachelor of IT and Bachelor of Computer Science students develop solutions to real-world problems for industry brands.

The Capstone program runs from March to October, with teams being chosen to have a mixed skill set, from UX design and app development to data analytics and more.

For Gavl, the students will be working on projects such as camera robotics, auction bidding gamification, property price estimations and voice-to-text translation.

Mr Donaldson said that they were excited to see the innovations of the young university recruits.

“In my view, recent graduates are closest to the latest technology trends and hungry to make a difference,” the executive said. “The next era of tech innovations will come from the freshest industry experts, so in working with Deakin’s School of IT, we’re providing real industry experience and creating career pathways for the next generation.”

Students commenced development in March, with prototypes anticipated throughout 2018.

Gavl will commit time to provide feedback and review work fortnightly, and students will also have access to an academic supervisor who will mentor, assess and manage the teams.
