The Australasian Real Estate Conference launched in its 21st year the Australasian Auctioneering Championships, which was held during the two-day conference.

A panel of four judged Queenslander Justin Nickerson of Apollo Auctions the winner.

The judging panel comprised of Rob Ward, CEO of Di Jones Real Estate; Jared Cooksley, director of Ray White Mt Eden; Alexander Ouwens, director of Ouwens Casserly Real Estate; and Kate Strickland, director of Marshall White Brighton.

The auctioneers were judged on criteria that included clarity and manner of delivery, description of the property, their handling of the bidding process and engagement with audience.

The competitors were required to auction the same property, a home in Palm Beach, Queensland, and were given a simulated bidding sequence that was representative of a regular auction.

Mr McGrath said that the competition was an outstanding success and it showed the skills of the auctioneers.

“Our first AREC Australasian Auctioneering Championships was a resounding success, with the four best auctioneers in Australasia battling it out. Our auctioneers are undoubtedly the best in the world and I believe their skill should be celebrated,” the AREC founder said.

Mr McGrath said that the competition would become an annual event at the conference.

“We will make this an annual fixture at AREC following the amazing feedback from conference delegates, most of whom had never had the opportunity to see auctioneering at this elite level,” the founder said.

The winner, Mr Nickerson said that he was honoured to be a part of the competition.

“I was honoured to be considered as part of the inaugural field, especially since I hold the other three auctioneers in the highest regard,” Mr Nickerson said.

Mr Nickerson was hoping that the competition would continue to grow and showcase auctioneers.

“I hope this competition continues to grow at AREC — it gives us a great platform to promote auctioneering as a skill and an art,” the winning agent said.
