Some of the top auctioneers from RE/MAX were put through two days of intensive training before competing for the title of Auctioneer of the Year.

The auctioneers were trained by professional auctioneer Dene Tucker before three of them were chosen as finalists for the competition.

RE/MAX Australia professional development manager Melanie Marsh said that the two-day course covered important skill sets and could even then qualify for a licence.

“The two-day Art of Auctioneering course covers important auction skills and processes in a practical environment and is fantastic for building confidence and understanding the auction process whether someone is considering becoming an auctioneer or not,” Ms Marsh said.

“There is a day three option to complete assessment required to qualify for an auctioneer licence.”

Ms Marsh said that this year, the three finalists were Paul Gaffney, Greg Mulvihill and Yianni Mooney, and they all lifted the standards of the competition.

“The exceptional standard made it hard for the judges, and it seems the talent just keeps on getting better with each competition,” the manager said.

In the end, the judges were not unanimous in their decision and the ultimate winner, Mr Gaffney, was decided on points.

Mr Gaffney, from RE/MAX Executives, is a sales associate who plans to be a full-time auctioneer. He said that the two-day course really added something to his skill set.

“Going through the course with Dene provided a good opportunity to refine my call and add to it from a new perspective,” Mr Gaffney said.

Mr Gaffney added that he felt that this year’s event was more competitive than before.

“I think we were a bit more competitive as a whole this year,” Mr Gaffney said.
