In its inaugural year, the REB Women in Real Estate Awards is designed to show REB’s support for the women in Australian real estate, to celebrate and recognise the leaders, role models and future champions of the industry and to join the campaign for a more gender-balanced world.

The event will be held in June in Sydney where the industry’s elite will gather to recognise the top female performers across a range of disciplines.

Awards will be presented to the best women in individual and company categories, across a range of classes including the prestigious Association Professional of the Year and Mentor of the Year – Working Agent categories.

Laing+Simmons managing director Leanne Pilkington said that the 2019 REB Women in Real Estate Awards will be a great opportunity to celebrate the success of women in our industry.

She said that more and more women are finding success in sales roles, which makes sense.

“The qualities that make a great agent, which underpin the building of strong relationships with buyers and vendors, are typical of the best women agents.

“Selling property is an inherently emotional experience and a natural fit for many women.”

But Ms Pilkington said that when it comes to leadership, Australian real estate has some way to go.

She said that there are many reasons many women don’t progress to positions of leadership in as many numbers as their male counterparts, and part of it comes down to flexibility in working arrangements.

“Recent research from EY found that inflexible job design, where full-time, leadership roles favour men and part-time support roles favour women, are part of the reason women are underrepresented at the top.

“A commitment from real estate business owners and principals to offer genuine flexibility to all employees, men included, is necessary to support people through the different stages of their lives as well as their careers. This is how loyalty can be built, and how new leaders can be groomed.”

REB editor Tim Neary said that the REB Women in Real Estate Awards is a necessary new initiative.

“The awards provide a platform for women in the industry to showcase their talents and be role models for others,” Mr Neary said.

“It is a great way to recognise the industry’s high-performance female agents, property managers, BDMs and businesses.”
