The final figures from the federal government’s HomeBuilder program are in, revealing that 137,621 Australians applied for subsidies to construct a home through the program.

Based on these numbers, Master Builders Australia has estimated the program delivered an economic boost of $120.62 billion, with the value of building work supported by HomeBuilder at $41.6 billion.

Denita Wawn, chief executive of Master Builders Australia, also noted that their figures put the total number of full-time jobs supported by the program at 294,960, “giving builders and tradies opportunity at a very difficult time for the industry”.

She said programs like HomeBuilder helped stimulate the building and construction sector at a time when the country was facing the worst recession since the Second World War.

Assistant Treasurer, Minister for Housing, and Minister for Homelessness, Social and Community Housing Michael Sukkar said each one of the 137,621 HomeBuilder applications represented more jobs for Australian workers.

“The HomeBuilder program is the economic gift that keeps on giving,” Mr Sukkar said.

“HomeBuilder continues to ignite the residential construction industry and has been a key part of the Morrison government’s economic recovery plan out of the COVID-19 pandemic. The direct economic impacts of HomeBuilder and the nationwide flow on effects will be seen well into 2023.”

Of all the states and territories, Victoria proved to be the biggest beneficiary of HomeBuilder, with 39,661 applications received from residents of the state. Queensland followed with 28,957 applications, just ahead of NSW, with 25,934. Western Australia also reported strong numbers, with 21,695 residents subscribing to the program.

South Australia had 13,939 applicants, Tasmania 3,935, and ACT recorded 2,939 residents looking to build or substantially renovate homes. The Northern Territory recorded 562 HomeBuilder grant applicants.
