A lot of people lose their sleep whenever they receive an electrical defect notice. Who wouldn’t be?

Although your electricity won’t immediately get cut and terminated, you are required to act upon the situation before it’s too late. There’s no need to worry too much as there are professionals who are able to deal with these kinds of problems with ease and efficiency. All you need to do is call for the services of a level 2 electrician.

When you receive an electrical defect notice, it means you have not complied with the safety standards set by the governing electrical authorities. You need to act on this fast as the repercussions of this type of violation can be a burden to you as well as to the safety of the residents in the property will be at risk.

Why does electrical safety in Sydney homes matter?

No one wants electrical accidents to happen at home. We are living in a tough time, and any situation that may lead to injuries, deaths, or additional costs should be absolutely avoided. Our Sydney properties should always be kept free from any electrical or fire hazards.

To keep things in check, laws and regulations are enforced by authorities for Sydney residents to follow. There’s nothing to be antagonistic about. The government and energy authorities are actually doing you a favour. Following the regulations and guidelines for electrical safety has a huge impact on the lives and belongings that are on your property.

The list below are the laws, standards, and guidelines that cover the requirements for electrical safety standards:

  • Ausgrid Network Standards
  • Endeavour Energy Network Standards
  • Electricity Supply Act of 1995
  • Electricity (Consumer Safety) Regulation of 2006

What is an electrical defect notice?

An electrical defect notice is sent and posted to you whenever there are violations observed during an inspection. Such inspections can be either a routine one or after a private call from people who have observed the violations themselves.

The electrical inspections are part of the authorities’ actions to enforce the practice of safe electrical standards in NSW. Private contractors and the owner of the property are liable for any violations observed.

Representatives from either of the two key distributors in Sydney, Endeavour Energy and Ausgrid, will visit your property for inspection. The officers will inspect all of the power lines running across your property. They will inspect the underground and overhead power lines as well as all the electrical installations inside and around the building.

Common violations include faulty wiring, outdated switchboards, defective or missing equipment, attachment issues, subpar alterations or modifications of electrical systems, and presence of imminent danger (e.g. structures, vegetation, or trees that can damage electrical wires).

Once any violation is observed, they will recommend the issuance of an electrical defect notice. The notice itself is sent via email or directly to the property address, and you are given 21 days to resolve the issue. The notice will be sent forth to both the private contractor and the owner of the property.

All types of building structure, may it be residential or commercial, are required to undergo inspection.

How to resolve an electrical defect notice

An electrical defect notice can be resolved by addressing the violations written on it. First and foremost, the contractor is primarily responsible for fixing the issues. If, however, the original contractor is not available to perform the repairs, you should contact a licensed level 2 electrician to do the job.

Remember that you only have 21 days to fulfil the requirements upon receiving the notice. If the repairs are not completed after the period has expired, the last resort would be the disconnection of your electricity until compliance with the safety standards.

For quick resolution of electrical defect notices in Sydney, contact Gordon Powers Level 2 Electricians. All of your concerns will be acted upon before the grace period expires.
