A South Australian initiative is looking to raise funds for individuals and families across Adelaide’s north who are at risk of, or experiencing homelessness.

The Salvation Army Parafield Gardens is hosting the Salvos Sleepout SA which will see a number of locals sleep in the open, in order to raise funds and awareness to the growing issue of homelessness across the area.

Based on ABS census data from 2021, 7,428 South Australian residents do not have a place to call home – a jump from the 6,224 who had indicated they were homeless back in 2016.

According to Major Paul Hateley, divisional commander SA/NT: “The current economic climate is really hurting a lot of South Australians.”

“Our services in the northern suburbs are seeing increasing demand and people who were already struggling are now desperate,” Major Hateley commented.

“We have people asking for financial assistance to pay their car registration because that’s where they are living.”

Offering practical relief to these vulnerable people, events such as the Salvos Sleepout SA ensure they can continue to provide practical services such as emergency relief, financial counselling, case management support and social engagement, alongside affordable food markets and the provision of hot showers and breakfast programs.

Harcourts SA has endorsed its support for the sleepout, sharing that the network is “proud” to be sponsoring this year’s event.

“We understand how important a safe place to call home is and with a focus on working locally, we look forward to supporting The Salvation Army in the vital work they do,” said CEO Gregg Toyama.

“Our Harcourts members are excited to have the opportunity to get involved in a practical way that really can help make a difference to those doing it tough in northern Adelaide.”

“We are looking forward to continuing this partnership and expanding Salvos Sleepouts across the state,” he concluded.
